New Display – new styling – new phrase

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve been here, and I haven’t done a damn thing craft wise. I have changed the blog theme again, after I posted that it was all good. I like it much better now. This is the one, and my new catch phrase is there at the top. I think that it encompasses my style well enough.

I have done a little more thinking, and today I bought some boxes for props. Even though they wont be used for carrying items, not all of them anyway, they wont be taking up extra space, as some of my other props will be relegated elsewhere. Never fear, they wont be gathering too much dust, I have plenty of chances to use differnet props.

I have decided on a feminine and retro vintage styled display. Something that accentuates my new jewellery and yet is an easy display to utilise. I feel this is the basis of my style, not totally retro or vintage, but a little of both maybe. Definitely feminine and funky. And totally Eclectic (according to the dictionary’s meaning – taking bits from different styles and using them all).

One set of boxes and ‘books’ all have the vintage Parisian look and pictures, while the other is slightly different with the words dream, believe, inspire and laugh on them with funky floral type patterns. Retro and funky, while still being inspirational.

This idea was all well and good until I set it up and realised that maybe the boxes would outshine the jewellery. Eek. I didn’t take that into account. They were covered with my white cloth and boxes turned into a mountain (thats what I saw, a rugged white mountain) and I draped necklaces over the edges, and added two earring stands. It looks much better. I might try it one day with bright pieces only on the darker boxes and see if it works.
Below is the mock set I did, only half done I know but the space is allocated to smaller items. I make sure all the large pieces and stands fit before anything else gets done. Please excuse the crappy night time pictures. I will do a short post tomorrow with it properly set up for market, hopefully it will look a lot better.

I have packed my boxes for market and I am really happy that I now only have 3 instead of 4 boxes, but there is less jewellery and so less props. If it all falls to shite, I can easily revert back to the way it was, but I am already liking this, weird as that may sound.

Distractions…. all 365 of them

After being a busy little bee for 3 or 4 days with my UFO’s, I was going to have a quiet day and just chill, maybe read a book or two and of course deal with any housework that was sure to rear it’s ugly head. A day off to recharge.
Well, my body had different ideas. After waking at 3am to my son being sick, I woke a few hours later with that dreaded feeling myself and thus spent the day between the bathroom and sleeping. Today I woke feeling much better, ravenous to boot (although I know better than to stuff myself) and dying for a coffee. Achy, and tired, but better, alive at least.
The body is still in mending mode so I took it easy with a few chores and then went to see what the post office had for me.
A whole magazine full of ideas and… distractions. I was ready to get back into my UFO’s but I’m not so sure now.
My pre ordered “365 earrings to make” from the “Bead Style” magazine had arrived and flicking through I found a couple of things to get onto right now. As in, right now. Oh yeah, I’m feeling much better all of a sudden.

So coffee in hand, I am off to my desk to hunt out a few beads and use this new found inspiration.
My first idea are these blue curved beads.

I thought I still had the black ones that are slightly longer, but not to worry. I’ll just make a pair each of gold and silver. Same beads, two completely different looks.

The silver pair have two strands of delicate chain with dangles of Swarovski, lapis lazuli and pearls.

The gold has glass, Swarovski and Aventurine rounds. Once I started to assemble them I noticed it needed something else

…. Enter the dark blue Swarovski, which adds contrast, yet brings them all together nicely.

They are slightly longer than the silver, with both being chunky but still feminine and delicate.

I think my UFO’s might get lost for a week or so while I work my way though a few new sets of earrings.
Here’s a better look at both of them…

$20 each
While they are quite long, they are very light, something you could easily wear all day. I might even make a pair for me.

Some new ideas…

While wandering the halls of Deloraine, well, sheds actually. I noticed something. All the jewellery stalls I saw, were selling the same sorts of things. Same stuff different stall kind of thing. All in styles that are very on trend at the moment.
Chunky resin, ceramic/porcelain pendants, glass, polymer in balls (literally, little balls of polymer on chains) or wooden pendants painted and strung on chain. That type of thing. All very much the same. Not boring, but almost. I wanted to see something different. These things I think are the reason I have not been accepted to the new market coming up. My pieces are not ‘on trend’. (love the day my style becomes on trend!)

Now I’m not going to change who I am or what I make, these things will drift off and other things will be popular. But it gave me an epiphany which I am going to work on.
Sure, I’ll still do my glass pendants, and my Wraptures, but I’m going to work on asymmetrical necklaces. Off centre, not equal on each side… That sort of thing. I’ve noticed that while brilliant, they are not so popular and yet I still see people wearing them.

I’ve googled and checked out what seems to be happening, they are everywhere – like a lot of jewellery styles – and can be made in many different ways.
I want to make more of my long feminine necklaces – like the one up there ^^ – with different flowers, and maybe even glass, or clay as the focal on the side. And also those that use fibre tie backs with a small amount of focal beads at the front.
I have lots of ideas already and have just under 3 days til the first summer market at Woodbridge starts, so I had better get a wriggle on.

I can still have fun making things that are different, but looking at the stalls in Deloraine, you could see a piece of the person in each piece. Know the artist by the look and style of each piece.
I don’t think you can do that with mine. There is too much difference. I’ll my mark my way.

And I would really really love to go to Deloraine next year.
There is something else major happening though that may get in the way, and which is prioritised first. (not telling, but you’ll know when the time is right, I promise)

Have a great day/night 🙂
