New thoughts, and a massive SALE!!!

I’m a creative person. In lots of ways. I write. I take photos. I make things. I enjoy cooking and experimenting. And I have a short attention span. At times. For certain things. Well, most of the time actually, and especially for my beads. What sells, what doesn’t sell and what I’m wanting to make. It’s a hard thing. Finding that niche, that thing that will set you apart. Finding the style that will keep me interested for more than five minutes.
I love making necklaces and bracelets and things. All the beads, the time to design and make them. The frustration when they don’t go to plan and the joy when it all comes together.  Sometimes completely differently to what I envisioned. My work space has been a shambles for a while. It quite often is. I try really hard to keep it tidy, but the creative within me decides otherwise. And so a mess it stays.
The other day I had an epiphany. I would concentrate on the accessories side of my business. The small things. Scarf bails, brooches, pendants, rings and earrings.
So with that in mind I can finally start on tidying my room with a plan in mind. Moving cupboards, sorting beads and tossing them out (eek! yes I did it).
Sure it’s coming up to winter and these items will sell better, but I find they are also are becoming my bread and butter items. The regular sellers.
I’m in the process of updating the website and am having a huge sale. To help shift my old stock and make room for new items coming through it’s a massive 40% off sale. Yep, I know that’s huge. I want to move things, so I can get onto my new ideas. At the moment it is 40%off the total but I will be changing the prices to reflect the items that are on sale as there will be my new regular stock also for sale.

So come on over to the website – click on the link to the top right – and go shopping. Remember I will be adding and moving items around regularly so be quick if you see something you like.

Cheers, Jen

Meet Josephine!

This week I welcomed a new ‘staff’ member to my team. She is still a little green and needs to look at how she presents herself, I think she will be a valuable part of the Marcato group.
She jumped right into the modelling aspect as you can see from this shot of her with a lovely red daisy chain necklace.

Later in the week we will be welcoming another new member which we’re both quite excited about.  Luckily the other girls aren’t the jealous sort, and if they had arms would have opened them to her.

Once I have everyone gathered we will have a group photo.

New theme

Ok,here it is.  After spending way too long on it last night, and stuffing up my widgets I am reasonably happy with this one. Minimilistic and tidy.
Please check out the website and tell me if you think they’re comparable or I should go back to something else, brighter maybe.
Website for perusal.

Cheers, Jen 🙂

website, blog and other beady stuffs

I’m doing a little upgrading and sorting on my website.  Working out what I should be adding on and taking off.
Do I have more or less Collections (galleries), do I stock lots of bigger, more expensive items, or do I do keep it as is and add in the smaller add-ons, the accessories, like bookmarks and hair slides?

I’m working on a page fo rmy re-made items. I’ve done so many but taken so few pictures.
I am happy to re-make and re-fashion items, or if you have a bag of beads, make something completely new for you. Items that are sentimental or broken, can’t throw them away – I can help you.
Re purpose them into something new and funky, or add a few new items and fix it up.

I’m also thinking of changing the designs on this page, so it’s more like the website in design. Now to spend the time to find one.. eek, but such a fun waste of time.  (update: I’ve had a quick look through the themes thnking I’d find maybe 3 or 4 that would be suitable, but no.  I found 8. This may be harder than first anticipated. Or very easy when I get into the nitty gritty of each theme)

I love the website, it’s clean and neat. Nothing too flowery and over the top.  Nothing gets in the way of crisp (for the most part) photos and clean lines.  All in pink, black and white.

I bought some pearls at the Craft Fair on Saturday with a few ideas of what to make.  Something to go with the pearl necklace a friend gave to me to fix and then keep.
Plus some scarf bails which I’ll make assorted dangles for so they are interchangable for the multitude of scarves I have.

That is about it for today, I have to go for my run and then, although the sun is shining out there (winter, where are you?) get back into inside jobs.  Like sorting market boxes form yesterday and the tidy and making thigns on my desk.
More computer work can wait til the evening when it is too cold to use my hands properly.

A picture of something pretty to finish with, coz I like to add pictures to my posts.

Have a great day or evening where ever you may be,
Jennifer 🙂

Part two – tidy the tables & light tent set up.

I’m currently mid flu and have anti bionics for a bad ear so have been lethargic and out of sorts. I. Coming out the other side now and having a good day. Much better than yesterday. So good in fact I pottered about in my room getting the next part sorted. The last post said how I had bought a cupboard and was re working my room. Well I’m finally back in to do a it more. Hopefully this week I will have it done, but no promises.

The easiest way to work it was to do one thing at a time. Today the sewing table. I emptied, cleaned, ironed items waiting, patched a shirt that had been a long time waiting and put them all away.
Now my sewing table is sewing machine, over locker and iron. Ready to get out at a moments notice – and be able to use all three without making mess on other tables.
Next I got the table near the bookcase emptied, sorted market bookwork that needed doing and put everything where it belonged.
Vacuumed.
Then packed up the table and put the other one there. I know that may make no sense but the angle of the supports underneath are higher on this one so less chance of kicking legs.
On this table is now the tray I am working on and the pile of books I will be using. Between this and my sewing table I will have space for computer work.
I put more of my paints in the tall boy, and have two retro suitcases I want to show off but not have sitting in there way. Where to put them?

My aim at the end. To have as little scattered around the room and lots of room to move and productive areas. A user friendly and comfortable place to be.

Two days later.
I have my light tent set up, or at least for today’s purposes while I do more on the website.
This picture does not do it any justice at all, but is purely for example sake. I tried to get a shot of how it looks with lights on and lights off to give you an idea of how much better the pictures will look. But as you can see, it just looks really dark, defeating the purpose completely. And it was daylight, overcast mostly, but not dark. This was taken around 10am.

The first – with lights, bright and clear.

And without – dull and not as much colour.

I don’t like to use photoshop or alter my pictures. I want to be able to show it as it is, only cropping and resizing as necessary.

I was going to get a shot of the desks all tidy and ready but they are now covered with laptop and stuff, and the other, all the bags ready to re photograph for the website.
Later in the week hopefully.

Keep crafty, Jen.

Finger and Ear candy rock!

So, it’s been pretty busy around here, and while I haven’t been in here, I haven’t forgotten either. It’s been in the back of my head to get back, upload things to the website, and generally do little bits as often as I can.

Today’s job was…. actually I’m not sure what I had planned for today (that was bad planning wasn’t it?). Despite my distinct lack of planning I have done a couple of things.

The website now boasts a group of my felted ‘ball & chain’ necklaces under the Limited Edition banner. I wont be making any more of these, and once they’re gone, that’s it. All over. At $18 each they’re pretty good value and easy. There are only 9 available.

Another item I have uploaded are the Friendly Plastic pieces. At $15 each for either a ring or pair of stud earrings, these are great value and make buying multiples for last minute presents a breeze.
They are both available in all the colours which I have posted pictures of in the ‘Collections’ section. There is no way to add a drop down box for colour selection so I’m relying on people to write it down and add it to their cart details.

As I said before, theses are both items I am happy to mass produce, as they are not a definite individual item like most of my jewellery.

The next item to put up, not sure yet. I have a short story to write later tonight, a half day at both home and work tomorrow, so maybe I’ll look through the photos and check what I have ready to go, I’m thinking more everyday necklaces as compared to asymmetrical.
And lastly, I need to get my vague routine under way to allow for all the usual house/family obligations and making new items. This point wil take the longest. I tend to get very distracted when hubby is home, but if I don’t work while he is here, then I lose track and don’t work when he is not (which is when I should be the most productive).

Til next time, tomorrow maybe, be sure to check out the website, give me feedback please and don’t forget to share around.

Marcato Designs or check out the funky link on the right hand side. I am so happy to have been able to make a cool link like that.

New directions, new ideas and a link for shopping.

I know I’ve said this before, and I do, do something, then my motivtion decides to bugger off and drops me in the slow box for a while. I even went looking for the post but I can’t find it short of looking through every single one. Yeah, that’s not going to happen.
And this resurgence in motivation and get up has been brought about by recent sales from my website and a post on Facebook that ‘pages’ are likely to be written off almost. Well, Facebook are saying that for your ‘page’ to be seen in the future you will need to pay for it, or pay for ads or something. And friends have already noticed a distinct drop in visitors and views – and these are the ones with over a 1000 likers, not just little people like me.
So my thoughts are now even more focused on what I have to do. I like Facebook because it’s free. I don’t want to be paying for it when I am paying for a website as well.
So I’m working on a couple of ideas to kick start the website and have worked out how much I need to sell to pay for it. While this is not a lot, there are other things I need to pay for as well, so it all adds up, and paying for Facebook is not a priority.
One needs to work out what is going to be best for them and utilise that.
So right now, I am updating and sorting the website. Next week (I am working 2 days and then am busy til the end of Monday) I will be getting photos to upload so people can order earrings/rings/hair slides in their colour choice. These are the easiest to do on a grand scale without me feeling like I’m selling out, or going against what I believe. All other items will be reduced for (hopefully) quick sales and I can concentrate on what I do really like. Retro/vintage /boho styles and my glass work (pendants & Wraptures).

I also need to empty and restart my studio from scratch. There is so much going on, I need to find some sort of better storage solution for everything.

More importantly, I need to get into a better routine. Routine is important. While crafty people tend to want to work whenever, it is still important to have some structure so things actually get done.
This has to work in with my Community Centre, market, family, work life. For those that know me, they know that my life is anything but staid and there are times when life will not play nicely. It’s all easier on paper at least) if you work full/part time. There are set times to work around.
I am also aware of the time I spend with or without my kids. They grow up quick enough I want to make sure they have everything they need before they get licences/jobs/girlfriends and leave the nest more often and for longer each time.

Where am I going with this. Short answer. There may be some kind of spamming of products, links, pictures, blabbing to get my name out there more and trying to drive more people along.
I’m thinking, as I type this to get some sort of (big) link on the sidebar that is a direct link to my website. Actually, that will be the next job.
~five minute time lapse ~ Woohoo, done, super easy and takes you to the home page. I can change that to whatever page I like, which I may do another day, the Collections page, or the Shop Front maybe… Now to go and pout it on the main blog.

Have a good weekend (I know it’s only Wednesday but I wont be back here til after Monday).
Jennifer

Busy Beading Fun

As per my post the other day about being on my own and getting creative. I had a ball. Or a bead. I got productive.
I needed to make some new items to take to market and add to the website. I will also be taking some to a little shop that expressed interest some back and see what they say.

Some of these pieces are completely new, others are old necklaces just re worked into my new style, which I really like.  Take the green and blue Chrysocolla one (with the diamond-shaped focal bead), it’s so much nicer than the simplistic two strand with centre focal bead.

I have had a good response from these funky imitation howlite skulls so I will work on getting some more and making a collection of them. Simple strung necklace and earrings, with an assorted mixture of colours, and earrings to match.
My website will be updated with the new items today, and my new weekly special is up and running on Facebook.

That heart. This is a hard one for me. I’m not sure I like it. I think the heart is just too much, too big and clunky.  Please, tell me your honest thoughts. Keep or toss! IMG_6869
